Do you still have cards and packages to send out for the holidays? If so, you better get ready to wait in long lines at the post office.
The U.S. Postal Service says Dec. 17 is the busiest day of the 2007 holiday season as people rush to send out last-minute items and cards to friends and family. Officials say they expect nearly 1 billion cards, letters and packages to be mailed.
On an average day, the post office receives 82 million cards and letters, but that number is expected to more than triple to about 275 million today, reports CBS station WBZ-TV in Boston.
Officials are suggesting people use automated postal centers, which are open 24-hours a day, to avoid the long lines that are expected.
Late mailers have until Dec. 20 to send letters and cards in time for Christmas delivery, according to the U.S. Postal Service.
For those who need a little more shopping time, there are still two more ways to get your packages where they need to be by Christmas. Packages sent via priority mail have a deadline of Dec. 20, while express mail packages can be sent as late as Dec. 22.
