Zap Away Zits?
by Diana Penna
SACRAMENTO (CBS 13) ―
Pimples, they show up at the worst possible times. It takes either a trip to the dermatologist or a lot of make-up to make them disappear.
But a new at home product called Zeno promises to get rid of certain pimples within 24 to 48 hours. Sharon Speegle is a believeer, practicing power cheer in Rocklin, this 14-year-old has as much desire to get rid of her acne as she does energy. She bought a Zeno because she's been battling pimples a long time.
"I've had it really bad since I was about 10, this is the best my face has ever been", she says.
The device is the size of a cell phone. It is placed against a pimple for a short time where it delivers enough heat to kill the pimple, but not enough to damage the skin.
"It's 120 degrees heat which disables the bacteria", says Kristin Murphy of Sona Med Spa.
Zeno is offered at doctor's offices and skin care centers like Sona Med Spa in Sacramento. The device is not meant for all problems like cystic acne blemishes or those big blackheads.
In clinical trials of 51 patients, 90% of blemishes treated one to three times disappeared or faded within 24 hours. Not everyone agrees the Zit Zapper is worth the 200 bucks it costs. Dermatologist Michael Kaminer had staff members and his daughter test Zeno. He was not impressed.
"We know that acne lesions start months before you see them and the treatment is preventive. Once the lesion is there the cat is out of the bag, so the concept of the Zit Zapper doesn't really fit with what we know about dermatology", says Kaminer.
Sharon disagrees, as soon as she feels a breakout coming on she says she lets Zeno do its magic.
"I used it right before picture day and there was a big pimple forming, no there's no pimple", she says.
