A Modesto surgeon's skilled hands will soon take him from the operating room to Carnegie Hall. Doctor Calvin Lee is an acupuncturist and a surgeon who hasn't touched his violin in 15 years, but he was selected from more than 4,000 entries on YouTube to perform with other musicians on the famous stage.
Dr. Lee posted his audition on YouTube to try out for the first YouTube Symphony Orchestra, which will consist of more than 90 musicians from more than 30 countries.
They will perform composer Tan Dun's "Internet Symphony No. 1, Eroica," a piece specially arranged for the occasion. A mashup will be posted on YouTube.com on April 16.
"It's the dream for many, many musicians, and what an opportunity it would be to experience one of the best stages for music," Lee said.
Lee says that getting the call informing him of his selection was one of the best experiences of his life. "I was like, wow," he laughed. "I was so dumbfounded, I acted like I was calm."
Doctor Lee will take the stage at Carnegie Hall on April 15.
