The jury in the Jennifer Strange water death case has found Entercom Sacramento LLC negligent in the death of Strange, and has ordered the company to pay the Strange family $16,577,118.
The jury also said that Strange was not negligent in her own death, and that the parent company of Entercom Sacramento LLC, Entercom, was also not found negligent.
The verdict was read at around 2 p.m., a few hours after the jury announced it had reached a decision.
Twenty-eight-year-old Strange died in 2007 of acute water intoxication after she participated in KDND radio's contest "Hold Your Wee for Wii."
During final arguments Roger Drywer, the attorney for Strange's husband and children, asked jurors to hold the radio station owned by Entercom Sacramento LLC and its parent company liable for Strange's death, and asked for more than $34 million in compensation.
Strange's children, ages three and seven, took the stand just before Drywer rested his case after nearly two weeks of testimony. Drywer made a point to bring up the death of Matthew Carrington, a Chico State student who died of acute water intoxication during a hazing incident
Radio personalities at 107.9 The End discussed that death on air a month before they ran the ill-fated "Hold Your Wee For A Wii" contest.
The lawyer for the radio station argued that it was not responsible for Strange's death. However, he did say he thought $4.5 million was a better number for compensation to Strange's family.
