Urn Filled With Ashes Found In Local Thrift Store

by Mike Dello Stritto
CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. (CBS13) ― In a thrift store warehouse you have all the usual stuff, but there's something a little different. Sam Mussro thought it was a vase, but then he realized it was actually someone.

"Monday mornings, a lot of strange things on my desk, but this has been the most strange," said Mussro.

After all, a cremation donation doesn't drop on your doorstep every day.

"This is a very first for us. We normally don't accept these kinds of things at all," said Mussro.

Why would they? There's no such thing as cash for ash that would be illegal. And who would want what's inside if they knew what was inside?

"I was pretty sure it was an urn anyway, because most vases don't have lids," said Mussro.

Getting a lid on this second hand screw up won't be easy. At St. Vincent de Paul, things come in by the hundreds every day. The accidental ash arrived late last week bundled in boxes.

"It could've been ten boxes, 20 boxes; I have no idea," said Mussro.

Between drop off and check, the urn was a sorting surprise.

"We don't have time to itemize a thousand pieces at a time," said Mussro.

But, now's the time to ID the urn and return remains.

Mike Dello Stritto: You don't want this sitting on your desk for the next several months.

Mussro: Not really, the conversation's been kind of one-sided.

So has the search. Someone out there has no idea they gave up grandma.

And although Sam says they have no idea who dropped it off, he's hoping because it's so distinguishable, they'll see this and realize this belongs to them.
