Newborn Baby Found Dead In Turlock
TURLOCK (CBS13) ―
A newborn baby was found dead in a shopping center dumpster in Turlock, police said Saturday.
The Turlock Police Department says that a person found the infant in a parking lot dumpster near a Savemart on the 1600 block of Lander Avenue. Emergency crews responded and found the baby warm to the touch, but were unable to revive the child.
Authorities are investigating the scene and trying to locate the mother of the baby, fearing for her health after giving birth.
Turlock police Sgt. Steven Williams said the late-to-full-term baby showed no obvious signs of foul play. Authorities encouraged the mother to contact police or at least seek care at an emergency room.
In California, the "Safely Surrender Baby Law" says that infants can be legally surrendered at hospitals and fire stations without any legal recourse to the mother.
