It's was a new year's nightmare as a gunman fired a shot after shot at a house, hitting a man who was trying to get inside. That man saved his friend who took a bullet to the chest.
Just hours after the start of the new year, at least eight bullets ripped through a South Sacramento home. You can see four bullet holes in the garage door, with more bullet holes nearby. Those hit only feed away from where children slept.
"This one right here went thru the wall to the house inside," said Peter Larry.
Larry says it all started when his best friend, who was just laid off, was staying with Peter's family. He came home from a new year's party around 4 a.m.
"I open the door he was outside bleeding," said Larry.
The gunmen out front were still shooting when Larry pulled the wounded man into the garage and called 9-1-1. He dodged bullets to save his friend's life.
One bullet was found lodged in the fireplace. Another bullet pierced a child's jacket. While some of the shots landed dangerously close to three young children.
"They were sleeping right next to where the bullets hit the wall," said Larry.
Only one person was hurt, but the entire family was left terrified. No one managed to get a good look at the shooters. Neighbors saw four hooded men running from the scene.
"A car came up real fast picked them up and left," said Elizabeth Lanej, a neighbor.
It wasn't the start to the new year they'd envisioned, but this family is grateful the dangerous situation didn't end up being much worse.
"We're all very thankful for the little ones; they're alright," said Lanej.
Police have very little to go on because the victim is in the hospital and unable to talk to them right now. Larry says his friend is expected to recover.
Larry says it's not even bad enough his house was shot up, but the shooters even took off with his car.
