Historic "Tower Records" Sign Comes Down

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― A piece of history that put Sacramento on the worldwide map has come down.  Workers removed the very first Tower Records sign.

This is at the former Tower Records store at Watt and El Camino.  Devoted customers stopped by for one last glimpse into the past. Watching the first-ever Tower Records sign come down.

Of course it's more than a sign for many.  It evokes memories from generations ago.

Russ Solomon started the Tower empire in the 1950's, selling records out of his father's pharmacy on Broadway in Sacramento.

This Tower Store was one of his first in 1960. The big yellow and red sign neon appeared a year later. By the 70's, Tower was well on its way to becoming a nationwide phenomenon.

Decades later, when technology ushered in the era of mp3, the empire fell.
Taking the sign down today symbolizes the end of an era.

The sign will be displayed in a city museum. Today in its place, a marquee sign read: "All things must pass. Thanks Sacramento."

Russ Solomon isn't done with the record business just yet. He now runs a music store called 'R5' on 16th and Broadway.
