An Elk Grove couple is facing felony child endangerment charges after
they allegedly left a two-year-old boy inside a parked car while they
went shopping at a Sacramento mall.
Authorities say the boy's mother, 20-year-old Mauriel Mercado, and her friend, 22-year-old Derek Garcia, left the toddler in Garcia's car Friday evening outside the Arden Fair Mall while they shopped at Macy's, according to a witness.
Mall security officials say the toddler was spotted by passers-by after he set off the car alarm. A mall customer got the toddler out the unlocked car. It's believed the child had been in the car for about 30 minutes.
Steve Reed, head of mall security, says the car's windows were up and the child was sweating and looked frightened before he was rescued.
The outside temperature was about 78 degrees when the boy was found, although authorities say temperatures in cars can be higher.
Mercado and Garcia were arrested when they returned to the car.
