Tiger Gets Surgery In Elk Grove
ELK GROVE (CBS13) ―
An Elk Grove veterinarian took on a tiger this weekend. The big cat from the PAWS animal sanctuary needed surgery and Franklin Ranch Pet Hospital in Elk Grove took on the challenge.
Six-year-old Kim, fondly named for actress and animal rights activist Kim Bassinger, is a 290-pound tiger. She was taken to be spayed at the Elk Grove pet hospital on Sunday.
Doctor Richard Strasser said Kim had to be spayed to keep her healthy.
"It's basically just a straightforward cat spay, just 10 times bigger," said Dr. Strasser.
The first step was to sedate Kim with a couple shots. A few minutes later Kim was out. The doctors had to work quickly, giving the big cat oxygen while checking her vitals.
After Kim was sedated, they moved her to the floor where they prepped her for surgery. Then she was moved into the operating room where the entire procedure took only 45 minutes.
Doctor Strasser said Kim made it through the surgery just fine. Franklin Ranch Pet Hospital donated its services for free. The surgery could have cost the non-profit organization thousands of dollars.
