Man Dies In Police Custody After Scuffle

LONG BEACH (AP) ― A burglary suspect has died in the back of a Long Beach police car after a scuffle with officers.

Police spokeswoman Jackie Bezart said Sunday it is unclear what caused the death of 18-year-old Deshoun Torrence.

She says the Victorville man was allegedly attempting a robbery at an apartment complex on Saturday night when he was captured by residents.

Bezart says the man fought with police who came to arrest him and that "necessary force" was used to subdue him. She says he had been checked by paramedics before he was put in the car and was alert and coherent.

Bezart says Torrence's fatal injuries either came from the residents who captured him or from police.

An autopsy has been ordered and the district attorney's office is investigating the case.
