25 Students Rescued After Being Caught In Storm
TUOLUMNE COUNTY (CBS13) ―
A group of seventh graders and their chaperones have been rescued after being trapped by a rain and snow storm in Tuolumne County.
The group of 25 students and eight adults from Stone Bridge Charter School in Napa were camping in an area known as Cleo's Bath on the South fork of the Stanislaus River above Pinecrest Lake. They were hiking out this morning when they were hit by the storm.
The group had to stop and find shelter where they tried to keep warm in their sleeping bags. The chaperones then used a cellphone to call for help.
Search and rescue crews located the group this morning and are escorting them out in smaller groups. They are being taken out of the forest and across the lake on fire boat where they will be transported to the fire station in Pinecrest.
It's unclear the extent of the injuries. The school group had hiked into the area on Wednesday and were due back this afternoon.
