NBA Commissioner In Town For Update On New Arena

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― The head of the NBA is in Sacramento today for an update on what he calls a 'critical path' he hopes will lead to a new Kings arena in the capital city.

NBA Commissioner David Stern will meet with Cal Expo officials, city leaders and the public for an update on the plans to build an arena at Cal Expo.

In an editorial published in the Sacramento Bee, Stern says the NBA is committed to an arena project in Sacramento.

Since deciding to move ahead this month, the NBA and Cal Expo have been hammering out the details of the billion dollar project.

Along with a new arena, the plan would spend about $40 million to revamp the fairgrounds and bring in new retail and offices.

Maloof Sports and Entertainment are not directily involved in the talks between the NBA and Cal Expo, but did release the following statement regarding the negotiations.

"We are supportive and appreciative of the work the Commissioner and the NBA have done on this issue. We look forward to being briefed on the Letter of Understanding (LOU) and learning more about what lies ahead. We are optimistic about the process and encouraged as it continues to move forward."

A new arena would still be years away if the plan ends up moving forward.
