The pilot of a single engine plane suffered minor injuries Friday after making an emergency crash landing on the water off Seal Beach.
The Cessna 150J was towing an advertisement banner when it apparently lost power around 4 p.m.
The pilot suffered minor cuts and bruises, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said. No one on the beach was hurt.
Seal Beach police Sgt. Steve Bowles said at least 1,000 people were on the beach for the July Fourth holiday.
Cassie Froescher of Portland, Ore. told the Orange County Register she was in the water when the Cessna flew over her head.
"We saw the plane, but we couldn't hear it. It flew right over us, and then there was this huge bam and we saw it hit the water," she said. "It just flew by. It was so quick."
Rescuers pulled the pilot out and dragged the plane to the sand.
Seal Beach is a coastal community south of Long Beach.
