Four Hikers Rescued, One Dies From Exposure

TRUCKEE (AP) ― A Sierra Nevada hiker has died at a Truckee hospital after being rescued by the Placer County sheriff's search and rescue team.

Authorities say 62-year-old Phyllis Hall was one of four people who were found by rescuers Saturday morning on the Pacific Crest Trail near Tinker's Knob.

Placer County sheriff's Sgt. Robert Dellinger says the four used a cell phone to call 911 after apparently suffering through a night of cold, rainy weather at more than 8,900 feet above sea level.

Dellinger says the hikers were not lost, but had apparently not anticipated the cold weather.

Although an autopsy has yet to be performed, authorities say it appears Hall died from exposure.

The other three hikers are 65-year-old Harold Herlan of San Diego, 49-year-old Pamela Bryant of El Cajon and 58-year-old Karen Lafferty of Hanford. They were reported to be cold and hungry but otherwise uninjured.
