Convicted killer Scott Peterson still swears he's innocent, and he's asking for donations to fund his legal defense.
Peterson's family is soliciting donations through e-mails and on a website to help pay for his appeal costs.
Scott Peterson currently sits in his cell on death row in San Quentin Prison, and we're already paying about $50,000 for that. California taxpayers are also picking up the tab for most of his mandatory appeal.
The state doesn't like to talk specific numbers, but CBS13 has learned that Peterson's attorney could cash in on a $368,000 base fee. Add in another $50,000 for investigation expenses, and the Peterson payday means pocketing nearly $420,000.
Scott Peterson and his family say that's not enough. They sent an e-mail Wednesday saying:
"Dear Friends, Family & Supporters
Even with the state's help, there is approximately $95,000 more needed to cover the expenses of the investigation
If each of you can make a donation between $5 and $50, we will be well on our way to making up this deficit."
"I would imagine that there are people out there in the world that feel he didn't do it, and might be willing to contribute," said attorney Bill Nimmo.
Nimmo believes the family will need a whole lot more than $95,000. "I would think several hundred thousand dollars," he said.
Investigating appeals cases takes time and money, and Scott's losing patience. Here's what he wrote in his latest death row blog entry:
"I am innocent, and I wanted to prove it as soon as possible... We need to complete forensic testing that the prosecution ignored, we need to hire experts to review evidence, and we need to hire investigators to speak with witnesses. The list is long, the budget is short."
Peterson was sentenced to death in 2005 for the murder of his wife, Laci Peterson, who was eight months pregnant.
