Governor Drops Plan To Release Low-Risk Inmates

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― Governor Schwarzenegger is dropping his plan to release 22,000 low-risk prison inmates early to save money.

The governor proposed the plan in January but is dropping it from the revised budget he presents to lawmakers tomorrow.

The governor had sought the early releases as part of 10 percent cuts in every state agency.

But legislators of both political parties balked at the idea.
