Governor Orders National Guard To Combat Wildfires

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has called up 200 of California's National Guard soldiers to help fight the wildfires that are burning across the state.

In a press release issued today, the Governor's office provided details of the decision. The National Guard will provide 10 Type-II hand crews, truck transportation support, and command and control personnel in coordination with Calfire and Governor's Office of Emergency Services,

"I can't say enough about the brave men and women working tirelessly, and with little rest, to battle the blazes across California," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "I am announcing a big shot in the arm to their efforts by ordering California National Guard soldiers to provide direct ground support on the fires," he added.

The Guard is also preparing to deploy eight bulldozers to assist in cutting fire lines. Both the ground crews and bulldozers are in addition to the firefighting helicopters and other aviation support the Guard is already using to fight the fires.
