Judge: Increased Pumping May Have Affected Salmon
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ―
A federal judge has ruled that water regulators didn't consider the effects of global warming and other environmental issues related to disappearing California salmon when they approved increased pumping of the state's Delta region.
U.S. District Judge Oliver Wanger (WANE-jer) on Wednesday tossed out a study prepared in 2004 by federal regulators, saying it was scientifically inadequate.
The study had concluded that more water could be taken from California's Central Valley to quench residential and agricultural thirsts throughout the state. The new pumping plan was already on hold because of a similar ruling the judge made about the Bush administration's failure to address effects on Delta smelt species.
Wanger ordered additional hearings on the matter.
