Federal Papers Set On Fire At Mosque

More Local News
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― A letter from the Department of Justice was set on fire at a mosque that is at the center of a federal investigation.

A church member discovered the scorched yellow envelope when he arrived for Sunday services at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

"I came around the outside of the gate, and on the outside of the envelope it said United States Department of Justice and there was a pile of ashes underneath," said Yusuf Ali Muhammad.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the Sacramento Metro Fire Department came out to the scene to investigate.

"This could be something as simple as a kid lighting it, or it could be something much larger," said Captain Christian Pebbles of Sac Metro Fire.

The property is owned by the New York City-based Alavi Foundation, which is accused of being a front for the Iranian Government and helping funnel money to its nuclear program. The U.S. Government is trying to seize eight properties across the nation, including this mosque.

Members have gone out of their way to distance themselves from the Alavi Foundation, saying they just rented the property from them.

"We've been tenants and renters from the organization," said church member Keenan Booker. "If it goes in the hands of different owners we'd still love to stay here and keep our presence in the local community."
