Lit Fireworks Thrown Into Kindergarten Classroom

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Investigators say someone threw the fireworks through a window of John Bidwell Elementary in South Sacramento. Despite the damage, it could have been much worse.

Authorities say the juveniles threw the fireworks through a window. They landed on the carpet, just feet away from stacks of flammable paper.

"This carpet has some marks on it from lit fireworks," said Vincent Matranga, school police officer.

This scorched carpet is one of a few signs in the kindergarten classroom that became a scene of an impromptu fireworks show Saturday.

"The big deal was that it could have caused -- it could have burned the school down," said Doucette.

Security cameras at the school were rolling around 1:45 p.m. when school police say four juveniles came onto the property. Police say two of the kids threw two fireworks into the classroom through an open window before taking off.

"The other lit firework was thrown across the room and damaged the carpet," said Matranga.

The damage was minimal, but authorities say if the fireworks had landed just a few feet to the left or right, the damage could have been much worse.

"We're very fortunate all books papers, flammable materials not caught on fire," said Matranga.

One of the suspects is described as a young man with a crew cut. The other suspect has a ponytail, and could be a girl. School police are confident they'll find the juveniles responsible because they're believed to live nearby. But they're keeping a close watch on all schools this Fourth of July weekend.

"I'm working today my other officers are working today it happens to be one of the busiest days for us in terms of vandalism crimes," said Matranga.

School police are hoping the principal will recognize at least one or all of these students on Monday. If caught, they could face serious discipline.

School police are asking people to keep an eye out tonight. If you see kids on school property with fireworks you're asked to call the police.
