Firefighter Talks Fail; 68 Layoffs To Move Forward
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
The Sacramento city council has rejected a last-minute proposal from a Sacramento firefighters union and will go ahead with dozens of firefighter layoffs early next month.
The firefighters union announced late Tuesday afternoon that they had proposed a deal that would prevent the 68 layoffs, but the city council voted to go ahead with the cuts as a way to close the city's looming budget deficit.
The final day for the laid off firefighters will be July 3.
City leaders have directed their staffs to start negotiating with three remaining city worker unions that have binding contracts with the city to restructure those contracts.
