Moratorium On New Cannabis Clubs Could Come To Sac
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Some Sacramento city officials and medical marijuana advocates are asking for a moratorium on the new marijuana dispensaries to give them a chance to develop new rules and regulations for the exploding business.
In the past six months, the number of dispensaries in Sacramento has jumped from seven to 29, according to marijuana advocates, fueled in part by President Barack Obama's pledge to stop federal raids of dispensaries that comply with state regulations.
"All of the sudden, storefronts started opening across the state," said Lanette Davies, director of the local chapter of the non-profit group Americans for Safe Access.
Cannabis club owner Brian Davies described the early days of Sacramento dispensaries as "the Wild West," and favors more regulation to stop the explosion of new clubs.
"What are you going to do, wait until there's one on every corner?" he said.
Lanette says there are virtually no rules that govern marijuana dispensaries, and has spent months asking city officials for a moratorium on new clubs until better regulation can be put into place. She expects that the moratorium wouldn't last for longer than a year.
The Sacramento City Council could make a decision on the subject as early as next week.
