A retired homeowner is on the hook for repair costs after a teen's
joyride ended with a stolen car crashing into his Roseville home.
Roy Prince, 84, said his troubles began in November when a teenager drove a stolen sedan into his home while he and a friend were in the kitchen.
"She saw the car airborne, coming through the air before it hit," Roy said. "Out of the blue, I heard this tremendous bang."
The impact punched a hole into the garage and smashed into his car parked inside. Roy has home insurance with Mercury, which reimbursed him for the items damaged in the crash -- minus the car parked inside.
The stolen car is covered by Farmer's Insurance, who is refusing to pay for the damage to Roy's car.
"Farmer says
they don't have to reimburse me because it was a stolen car," Roy said.
Roy was forced to dish out about $5,000 from his own pocket to get his car and house fixed. The former real estate agent doesn't have a pension, but does have some savings and depends on Social Security.
"You'd be surprised how quickly it adds up," he said.
Adding to Roy's stress is the recent loss of the love of his life, Betty. They were married 60 years.
He still has repairs to make on the car, which is not drivable after the wreck.
"So, I'm stuck," Roy said.
The teen suspect has been ordered to pay restitution for the damage, but Roy does not expect to hear from him any time soon.
