City's 'Cash For Grass' Program A Huge Hit
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) ―
Residents in one local city are lining up to tear up their lawns, and the city is making plans to greatly expand the program to those who wish to take part.
Roseville's "cash for grass" program has been a huge success, tempting homeowners with up to $1,000 to trade their lawn for water-efficient plants. The initial budget of $30,000 covered the first 45 applications into the program, but there are a total of 137 homeowners on the list.
The city is hoping to add about $60,000 to the project to accommodate everyone.
Roseville residents Gordon and Nancy Kulas think the program is a great idea, even though they gave up their grass before the city's project started.
"We save money because I sold my lawn mower," Gordon said. "Don't have to buy gas, not polluting the air."
Plus, they never have to pull weeds again, which they called one of the best benefits.
"It's kind of a relieve to come out and just sweep the leaves off the rocks, that's all we do now, we just have a broom," Nancy said.
Roseville launched the program and other efforts after Governor Schwarzenegger declared a drought in the state.
