Teacher Arrested On Sexual Misconduct Charges

A former history teacher at Rio Americano High School was arrested on 17 charges of alleged sexual misconduct, police said Wednesday. Gregory J. Rayburn, 54, was arrested at his Grass Valley home shortly after 8:30 a.m. on today, on a warrant detailing 15 counts of child annoyance and two counts of sexual battery.
According to police, Rayburn had sexually explicit conversations with four teenage girls and touched them inappropriately. Investigators also say that he had the girls pose for sexually suggestive photographs.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said that the four victims, two 17-year old girls and two 16-year old girls, were all students at Rio Americano. Sgt. Tim Curran has said that Rayburn has been investigated for similar crimes in 2005, but the district attorney didn't have enough evidence to pursue the case.
A three month investigation into the new allegations of misconduct began in December of 2007, which saw Rayburn being placed on paid administrative leave. The investigation ended with the arrest of Rayburn.
Rio Americano says that Rayburn was a teacher at their school since 1996, except for a two year stint he spent in the military. Rayburn in jail on a $120,000 bail, and is to be arraigned Friday on the charges.
