Officials Expected To Approve RT Fare Hikes
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
A $9 million budget gap may force Sacramento Regional Transit officials to hike fares for the second time this year and eliminate a number of routes.
The Regional Transit District is holding a public meeting tomorrow to talk about the proposed chances, but immediately after, board members will likely approve the controversial new measures.
The most controversial part of the plan would be to raise the basic fare by 25 cents, from $2.25 to $2.50. The plan also calls for service on 11 routes to be eliminated or reduced, and 50 cent transfers would be abolished -- riders would have to pay $2.50 per bus or $6 for an all-day pass.
The higher fare would make RT rates some of the highest public transportation fares in the region. West Sacramento and San Francisco fares are just $2, and riders in the Stockton-Modesto area pay about $1.50.
Officials say the higher fares are necessary to close the huge deficit in their budget.
The public meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday at Regional Transit's location on 29th Street.
The proposed changes would take effect in September.
