Thomas Lake, the 79-year-old driver of a car that was involved in a crash that killed Rancho Cordova Police officer Larry Canfield Wednesday has a clean driving record, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Lake has no accidents, and possesses a valid license, says the DMV.
Police say 43-year-old Canfield was trying to stop a speeder on Coloma Road when a vehicle driven by Lake allegedly pulled in front of him at the intersection of Coloma Road and Chardonnay Drive. Canfield collided with the vehicle and was killed.
Investigators believe the 79-year-old driver didn't see Canfield coming.
The CHP is investigating the circumstances of the crash.
Friends, family and local law enforcement are mourning the loss of a fellow officer who lost his life in a tragic accident.
Canfield's former partner was paralyzed nearly years ago when his motorcycle collided with a car at Cordova Lane. The driver in that crash claimed he didn't see the officer.
