Stray Cats Overrun Rancho Cordova Park

RANCHO CORDOVA (CBS13) ― A growing number of stray cats are appearing in a local park, and residents are divided on how to deal with them. Some residents want Animal Control to capture the felines, but other residents protest, calling that option a "death sentence" for the animals.

Hagan Community Park in Rancho Cordova seems to be overrun by feral felines living under dumpsters and behind bushes; some are dumped here, others are born here, but they don't have a problem finding food.

Scottie Moore fills the cat's dishes daily. "We don't have a cat problem," she said. "We have a people problem."

She wants the Cordova Recreation and Park District to approve a plan she created that would allow her to trap, neuter, and return strays back into the park. According to Moore, it wouldn't cost the city a dime.

Some neighbors object, saying that untamed cats are terrorizing the block. "They defecate everywhere," said Sheila Schmid, who lives nearby. "Our lawns, the neighbors' lawns, all the way down the street."

Animal Control can help trap the cats, but not everyone likes that idea.

"If you call in animal services the cats are deemed feral, and it's a death sentence," said Moore. "They're all killed."

"We would like to see them capture them and take them our of here," said Schmid. "There's too many."
