Gay rights activists are debating whether to rush a repeal of Proposition 8 to the 2010 ballot if California's highest court upholds the state's same-sex marriage ban.
While two initiatives seeking to undo the voter-approved November measure have already been submitted to the Secretary of State, leaders of the bitter No on 8 campaign say next year may be too soon to bring the issue back to the ballot.
About 400 activists gathered for a statewide planning summit in Los Angeles on Saturday to discuss the matter.
Although several legal challenges are pending before the California Supreme Court, the option of another ballot fight is being discussed as a backup strategy since Prop. 8 passed with 52 percent of the vote.
The court could render a decision as early as June.
If the Supreme Court upholds the measure, same-sex marriage supporters would have a very tight window in which to prepare and pull off a November 2010 rematch. Activists say the deadline for gathering signatures for the November ballot initiative would be in the fall.
