Local Postal Worker Accused Of Stealing Thousands

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― He's accused of taking tens of thousands of dollars from the government.

The Post Office inside a stately building downtown is where the suspected crime happened.

A complaint filed in District Court says 54-year-old Stephen Martin spent nearly a year picking the pockets of the federal government.

Martin worked as window clerk, like a teller inside the post office, but he seemed to treat his job like he was in charge of an ATM.

The complaint outlines theft after theft, ranging from a couple hundred dollars to sometimes nearly $2,000 in a single day.

The total was more than $38,000.

Tonight, instead of opening up about the crimes, Mr. Martin is staying behind closed doors.

CBS13 reached Mr. Martin by phone. He agreed to talk with us and said this was a cry for help. But when CBS13 cameras got to his home he said he had been advised not to talk to us because of an upcoming court appearance.

The complaint says Martin confessed to stealing the money. There are questions tonight if gambling played any role, due to the fact that while Martin allegedly admitted he gambles almost everyday, he denied he stole the money to support
