Local Man Converts Porsche Into Electric-Only Car
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
A local man has converted his Porsche into an electric vehicle -- not just a hybrid; call it a "purebred," a car that runs entirely on electricity.
Jimmy Sarmiento bought the classic car for just $3,500, and spent $15,000 turning it into something we may see more of in the future: A car with no gas tank and no exhaust, but still has some flair.
"You don't want to be like an old Yugo, sputtering at 35 miles per hour," Jimmy said.
There are 18 batteries under the hood, and Sarmiento installed them himself. The do-it-yourself ethic explains the fan from his person computer and a cork from an old wine bottle.
Sarmiento's 1975 Porsche 914 can go up to 90 miles an hour, and only cost about 75 cents a day on his electric bill.
"It also minimized my carbon footprint," he said.
It's now possible to own a Porsche without using the gas pump; a different kind of sticker shock.
