Two pit bulls terrorized an Elk Grove neighborhood, viciously attacking people and their pets.
Cops shot and killed one of the pit bulls on the prowl and took the other to animal control. Tonight, that dog is back with its owner in the same neighborhood where it went on the attack.
"I didn't know what I was going to do; I thought I was done, I thought I was toast," said Danny.
Danny and his cocker spaniel "Buddy" thought they were dog food. Danny says Wednesday morning while they were walking through an Elk Grove neighborhood two pit bulls launched a surprise attack.
"I'm holding him like this and they were pulling his feet so I'm holding him up like this," said Danny.
But it wasn't enough. The higher he held buddy the higher the pit bulls jumped, nipping Buddy's feet, trying to pull him to the ground as buddy yelped in pain.
"So I was able to work my way to the pickup as the dogs were jumping pulling at my dog's feet," said Danny.
Danny threw buddy into the bed of the pickup truck and called police. Police say the pit bulls then went on a rampage, attacking and mauling another small dog and chased neighbors. But when police showed up their guns came out.
"And the dog died right in front of the house," said Priscilla Sharma, neighbor.
Police killed one of the dogs in front of Priscilla's home.
"And the dog was lying beside the trash on its back with all fours was paws faced like this," said Priscilla.
The other dog was captured by animal control.
"If you're being chased by a pit bull, you have no other choice but to run," said Chris Trimm, Elk Grove Police.
Police say it could have been worse if kids were involved.
"Historically, these types of animals have a history of causing great damage to small kids -- even adults," said Trimm.
"I've always had pitbulls to some extent," said John Invanoff, pit bull owner.
Some pit bull owners say don't blame the dogs.
"They've always been wonderful dogs. I think it's how you raise them," said John.
Police say the other pit bull was released back to the owner. And the owner was not arrested and is facing multiple misdemeanor charges for not keeping the dogs secure. And the other little dog that was mauled is said to be okay.
