Get Out Your Quarters, Parking Meters For Sale
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
For many, parking meters are nothing but a pain. So how would you like to own one? Starting today, for just a few quarters, you can buy a piece of Sacramento City history.
For the last thirty years, old wind-up parking meters have swallowed the quarters of motorists parking in downtown Sacramento.
"These are basically wind-up," explained City Program Specialist Matt Eierman, "There's no batteries in them, so when you put the quarter in them, they wind up."
But now time has run out for the old parking meters. The city is now collecting parking fees with new high-tech pay stations that take credit and ATM cards.
And city officials have come up with a new idea to cash in on the old meters. They're selling them for $50 a pop. That's 200 quarters for those of you keeping track. But will they take quarters?
"We prefer check or credit card," said Eierman, "We will take quarters."
And the city will gladly take the $75,000 it hopes to raise by selling 15 hundred of the out-dated parking meters.
If you decide to buy one of the meters, you may need to use a little soap and water on it. The city is selling the meters 'as is'.
The money raised will go directly into the City's general fund. The meters will be on sale every Wednesday through August at Cesar Chavez Park.
