Rats Take Over Cesar Chavez Park
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
In a local park, the rodents have been crawling and people have been complaining for months.
It's downtown Sacramento's Cesar Chavez Park. People stroll down the sidewalks under the shimmering light. Birds soar up above as dusk turns to night. It's a perfect time for a little boy and his mom to go for a walk, take in a breath of fresh air and see - rats the size of a small bunny!
They dart and dash. They are in search of trash, in the can, on the ground. They're not too afraid of people. After some complaints, the city has hired a company to get even closer and take care of them.
"We've hired a pest control company to put traps all over the park."
The city says it's committed to getting them out of a park that's right smack in the heart of downtown.
"We've made sure our workers are picking up the trash, any bird seeds on the ground, any food that's left. So we're being proactive."
They can't be rat busting 24/7, which explains the feeding frenzy we encountered. We learned rats don't fight over food but they sure do jump when they're scared. But, where did all these rats come from?
There's a lot of construction in the area and the rats are leaving those buildings and coming to the park. They seem to be feeling right at home.
