An Oak Park neighborhood is eating healthier thanks to an urban farm stand that has decided to accept food stamps for its fresh produce.
The plan was put together by the Oak Park and Curtis Park Neighborhood Associations to make fresh fruits and veggies available to people who might not otherwise have a chance to purchase them.
"It's part of a food access program to bring walkable nutrition to Oak Park and the surrounding area," said Davida Douglas, the coordinator of the farm stand.
The area lacks places to shop, but the new stand is bringing crowds to McClatchy Park. Most farmer's markets are cash-only, but this one accepts EBT, or electronic benefit transfers -- colloquially known as food stamps.
"Food stamp clients have been receiving more dollars to buy food and we can process their cards right here in the park," Davida said.
One drawback to the new crowds: Vendors sell out of their goods fast.
The farm stand is open every Saturday through October from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It's set up on 5th Avenue at McClatchy Park.
