Nevada Co. Train Accident Kills Mom, Injures Son
TRUCKEE (CBS13) ―
A Christmas day hike in the snow turned tragic in Nevada County after a mother and son were hit by a train.
The Nevada County Sheriff's Department say 59-year-old Sydney Parks of Petaluma and her 22-year-old son Alan Young were hit by the train near Soda Springs while out on an afternoon hike. Deputies and paramedics responded to a call of pedestrians hit at about 3:30pm and found the pair just north of the tracks. Parks was pronounced dead. Youn was taken to Truckee Forest Hospital with severe injuries.
Young told investigators he and his mother were hiking on what they believed was a trail, not realizing it was snow covered train tracks. When a Union Pacific train plowing the tracks approached, it blew its whistle and tried to stop. The mother and son tried to get out of the way, but because of blowing snow and whiteout conditions, the pair moved into the path of the oncoming train.
The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating.
