Vandals sprayed Nazi imagery on a Jewish temple in Carmichael and referenced anti-Jewish riots that led to deaths of dozens in Nazi Germany in the 1930s.
The vandals spray painted a swastika, the letters "SS," and wrote "Kristallnacht lives" at the Congregation Beth Shalom located at 4746 El Camino Ave., according to authorities.
Bushes near the temple were burned by the vandals.
"This was vandalism done by cowards," said congregation president Mike Alcalay.
The FBI is leading the investigation into the hate crime and is working with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department and ATF agents. Authorities do not have a description of the suspects, but investigators are looking through surveillance footage to identify them.
Kristallnacht was a night of Nazi-sanctioned riots against Jews in Germany on November 9-10, 1938,
according to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, leading to the deaths of dozens and the arrest of thousands, and is referred to as the "spark that ignited the Holocaust."
