A group of local school kids are hitting back against budget cuts recently approved by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, using satirical music theater to creatively protest the death of their school music programs.
"This is about a group of public school girls who are involved in their music theater class," said Katy Rose, the director, producer and writer of Dear Mr. Schwarzenegger..
The characters in the musical are in a class that's about to disappear because of budget cuts -- sound familiar?
A Citrus Heights theater group, consisting of girls of ages 6-14, is performing Dear Mr. Schwarzenegger this Friday. The story of the made-up musical class sends a clear message with biting humor, and the play doesn't mince words
or accents.
"I am the Terminator," one girl intones in the accented voice of the famous movie character. "I will terminate all of your music programs and art classes."
Through both dialogue and song, the girls belt out their frustration to the Governator. Katy Rose says it's a chance for the participants to use their talents to express themselves.
"My goal [in] writing the script was to sort of give the kids a voice as to how they feel, because they don't understand all the political side of everything," Rose said. "All they know is that they're passionate about art. They're passionate about theater."
The girls agree. "Just because Schwarzenegger takes away our class, he can't take away our passion," one girl said. Another chimed in, "No matter what happens, what's the one thing we're always sure of?"
"The show must go on!" they all shout together.
The performance of Dear Mr. Schwarzenegger will take place Friday, July 31, at 7:00 p.m. at the Citrus Heights Community Club House at 6921 Sylvan Road.
The performers say the governor is invited.
