SANTA CLARA, Calif. (CBS13/AP) ― A Beale Air Force Base airman was fatally shot and killed during a shootout with police in Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.

The suspect was wanted in connection with the murder of a 19-year-old woman and the shooting of another man in Marysville Saturday night.

Police Lt. Phil Cooke says a Santa Clara police officer on patrol Sunday thought the man fit the description of 21-year-old Ian Sloan York, sought for the alleged murder at an apartment complex on the 2300 block of Cheim Boulevard in Marysville.

Cooke says York shot at the officer, who returned fire, and that the suspect then fled to a nearby creek bed.

Officers from Santa Clara, the California Highway Patrol and other agencies responded and exchanged gunfire with the suspect, killing him. Cooke says no officers were injured.

York was reportedly dating the victim of Saturday night's shooting. Witnesses said the two were seen fighting earlier in the day.

Another man was injured in the shooting, but is expected to survive.

At least two Santa Clara officers are on paid leave while the department and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office investigates the incident.
