Multiple Fires Mark First Day Of Fire Season
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
All day long, small grass fires popped up across the valley, keeping fire crews busy on the first day of fire season.
Placer County firefighters worked long into the night on a heap of rubble, the aftermath of a wind-swept grassfire. The fire flared up right next to Alan Deala's home, so he grabbed the garden hose and called 911.
"Basically, we smelled smoke in the house," he said. "[The fire] was coming from the road at breakneck speed."
The gravel driveway did a good job as a fire line, keeping the flames from getting any closer than 15 feet from the house.
Over at Roseville Road and Antelope, Sacramento Metro Firefighters fought another grass fire near railroad tracks next to a new Wal-Mart. They had extra help because of the fire danger.
"Our dispatch center does it automatically if there's an increase in winds over 15 miles per hour," said battalion chief Ed Crawford.
In Marysville, a 16-acre brush fire started in bone-dry brush. Cal Fire coordinated the winning battle to have the blaze surrounded and out in just a few hours.
It was a long, busy day that may be good practice for a long, busy fire season that has just started.
There are no reported injuries or structure damage in any of the fires.
