Morgellons: Northern California Medical Mystery

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― It feels like creepy crawly bugs all over your skin as well as its mysteriously red, blue or black fibers that sprout from the skin. For now, this mysterious disease had been given a name – Morgellons.

It looks like skin lesions or rashes. Some experts believe the bizarre skin problem is just a psychiatric phenomenon. But now, the Centers for Disease Control says its time to look deeper, and it will happen right here in Northern California. The CDC is paying Kaiser Permanente to conduct the study. The health care giant will pull as many as 500 study patients from its customer base.

Registered nurse, Cindy Casey says she she's got it.

"It's been extremely disfiguring, arms, legs, hands, back. I don't escape it for even one moment," explains Cindy.

Northern California has one of the highest rates of people complaining of the bug bites symptoms. That's why patients in Sacramento will be a big part of the study.

The study will take at least a year to complete, hoping to answer the question whether Morgellons is real disease or just a delusion.
