SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
A local college student was arrested, accused of embezzling money from the school bookstore he was working for. Investigators say they'd had their eye on him for a while, and his fellow students at American River say they feel betrayed.
Eric Webster, the suspect's co-worker at the store, says if you see the guy everyday you wouldn't think he'd do something like that.
Students at American River College are learning one of their own is accused embezzling money from the school. They think it's terrible.
Raymond Gonzales, a 21-year-old junior, has been under the investigative microscope since July of last year.
Police say while working here at the bookstore he allegedly embezzled an undisclosed amount of money.
He worked as a cashier ringing up countless sales handling ATM, credit cards, and cash. He's not only being charged with embezzlement but grand theft and obtaining money by false pretenses. But police aren't saying how.
Eric Webster said he saw him around school and he didn't seem like that type of guy. Even though police are not saying how he allegedly did it, there may be a clue on the door. Since his arrest yesterday the bookstore changed the rules. They no longer take ATM cards until further notice.
Student, Doralee Ewing said, "It's kind of concerning me because I use a credit card and you show your ID when you buy books or register."
Captain Sheryl Sears with the Los Rios Community College Police says school officials are now evaluating how student workers handle money.
"We typically run a pretty tight ship. We have audits and checks and balances in place to make sure this type of thing doesn't happen."
When Eric returns to the bookstore tomorrow he expects more scrutiny.
"They'll tighten up the rules and start looking over shoulders a lot more."
