Detectives Looking For Victims of Identity Theft

RIVERBANK, Calif. (CBS13) ― Two suspects in an identity theft ring have been arrested, and now Riverbank Sheriff's Detectives are hoping to identify their victims.

According to the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department, detectives were investigating the source of a fraudulent check cashed at a local Target store, when they recognized the suspect on surveillance footage as Jimmy Newell.

Newell had previously been arrested on October 16 for using a false identification, but was out on bail.

On Saturday, Modesto Police officers found Newell at a house along with Gilliam Stephens.  Stephens was suspected of burglary, and when detectives searched the location, they found equipment used to make false drivers licenses and Social Security cards.

Detectives stated that they believe Newell was replacing the photo on stolen driver licenses with his before using them to cash false checks at local businesses.

"We have stolen property identified from a few recent burglaries in Modesto," said Riverbank Detective Priscilla Woods. "But there are more victims from this case that we are looking for."

It is believed that the two suspects used false IDs in cities between San Jose and Modesto.

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact Detective Priscilla Woods at (209) 869-7162.
