Dozens Of Tombstones Vandalized In Modesto
MODESTO (CBS13) ―
Vandals toppled and destroyed dozens of headstones at Modesto cemeteries, and police have no leads in who's behind the costly crime.
At least 25 tombstones were destroyed, and many more were damaged in five cemeteries on one property. Modesto detectives say it's not the first case of vandalism at a local graveyard, but it's one of the worst.
"Some of the tombstones had been pushed over, others had been damaged, cracked after they were pushed over," said Sgt. Brian Findlen of the Modesto Police Department.
Investigators say the damage happened overnight, and a maintenance worker discovered the damage Sunday morning.
Each headstone could be worth at least $500, authorities said, so any suspects in the case could face felony charges.
