Authorities say the one member of the family of four that has been missing for more than a week may have been spotted in the Bay Area as recently as 48 hours ago.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office says Sarah Jean Smith, 28, and her boyfriend Jason James McClellan, 40, were last seen Oct. 20 with Smith's children, 7-year-old Joshua Bargus and 1-year-old Kylie Jean Jus, after an apparent argument with Smith's mother.
The couple had gone to pick up the boy with the 1-year-old in the car, and they haven't been heard from since, said sheriff's Lt. Brian Golmitz. Smith's mother reported them missing three days later, saying they did not have any trips planned.
Authorities say they believe that Sarah was spotted in the Bay Area on Monday.
"At least the mom, Sarah, has been spotted in the Pittsburgh-Antioch area, but we have good sources that says she's been seen down there," said Lt. Bryan Golmitz of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department.
Golmitz said the foursome had been staying with Smith's mother in the Georgetown area, a rural area about 60 miles northeast of Sacramento. They had been in the area for about five weeks after leaving Brentwood, in Southern California, where the father of one of the children lives, "in the same kind of manner that's happening now," Golmitz said.
"We have interviewed countless people in terms of tring to find relatives, Brentwood police who went and talked with relatives there, and it's all coming up empty," Golmitz said.
The family also does not have a working cell phone or any known bank accounts or credit cards, Golmitz said.
They were in a 2004 silver Honda Civic with no license plates. Authorities say there are no signs that foul play was involved but the family could be at risk.
"That area is very rural, it's out in the mountains," Golmitz said. "One of our thoughts, possibly, was a traffic accident where the vehicle might have left the roadway."
But he said deputies spent days driving area roads and even used a helicopter to search for them, but found nothing.
