NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson Shakes Up Mayor's Race
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Sacramento mayor Heather Fargo may be getting some serious competition in her race for mayor. The big news comes with a big name, basketball star Kevin Johnson is seriously considering a run for Sacramento mayor.
Kevin Johnson plans to go from basketball to possible political hardball. The Oak Park native and former Phoenix Sun apparently considering the mayoral showdown for months. Political consultant David Townsend says there's even been a poll in the last few weeks, asking Sacramento voters who they'd support in a face to face match pitting Johnson against mayor heather Fargo.
Townsend says support for Johnson is overwhelming. Votes of confidence would have to translate to votes at the precinct. The June third mayor race had been off the radar. Heather Fargo's run for a third term going virtually uncontested. There had been talk of county supervisor roger Dickinson and Assemblyman Dave Jones running. Both bowed out saying they weren't interested.
Johnson's strong interest could bring some strong criticism. Hailed as a hometown hero, he's also considered a so called slumlord by some. A handful of people renting homes from the all-star say he dropped the ball on his Oak Park properties. They are demanding he clean up his act and clean up their homes. There will be mud to sling in a race that suddenly could be getting a whole lot more interesting.
