Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will name State Senator Abel Maldonado to be the new Lieutenant Governor of California.
Governor Schwarzenegger made the announcement Monday afternoon at a taping for Jay Leno's show.
A family member told CBS13 that the moderate Republican lawmaker from the Central Coast was told about the appointment last week in a call from the Governor's office.
"Senator Maldonado has proven he has the strength and courage it takes to reach across the partisan divide and put the interests of Californians first and he is absolutely the most qualified person to take on the role of Lieutenant Governor," Schwarzenegger said in a statement.
The Lt. Governor position was left open after Democrat John Garamendi won a Congressional seat in early November.
Maldonado will have to be approved by the Democrat-controlled State Senate and Assembly.
The 42-year-old Santa Maria lawmaker was one of three Republicans earlier this year to side with Schwarzenegger and Democrats in supporting a state budget that raised taxes. Schwarzenegger says Maldonado has the courage to reach across the partisan divide.
The position pays $159,134.
