Lodi Mother Son Duo Arrested In Lottery Scam
LODI (CBS13) ―
Luck runs out for a local lottery retailer and her son who are now under arrest and accused of withholding thousands of dollars worth of winnings from their customers. The two work at a Quik Stop Market convenience store in Lodi, and were arrested by lottery officials as part of a statewide sting.
Cameras were rolling as CBS13's Elyce Kirchner walked into the West Lockeford Street Quik Stop Market in Lodi.
Working behind the cash was Baljut Kang arrested Wednesday in a statewide lottery sting.
Kang refused to talk at first, then finally responded to allegations that her and her son tried to cheat lottery winners out of cash.
"They found some ticket in the garbage. They thinking that we doing fraud," says Kang.
But officials say undercover agents posing as customers witnessed the fraud.
And in this sting operation, authorities say the first time the agent came in she brought in a ticket that was worth $990, gave it to Kang and she only got back $24.
Another agent proceeded to bring in another ticket, worth even more - $25,000. She gave the ticket to Kang, and she gave the agent just $10.
But longtime customer, Elizabeth Ruiz says she's brought her lottery tickets here for years and never had a problem.
"I have never gotten them anywhere else," says Ruiz.
