U.C. Merced May Change Mascot To Fairy Shrimp

MERCED, Calif. (AP) ― A move by some students at UC Merced could end up pitting a Golden Bobcat against a Fairy Shrimp.

The Golden Bobcat was chosen as the university's mascot by area school children before the campus opened last year.

But now a school official says some students are rallying for a name change to the Fairy Shrimp.

The shrimp is an endangered creature found in the vernal pools on and around the campus.

If UC Merced does change the name of its mascot it would be joining a couple of other universities with unusual names.

UC Santa Cruz calls its teams the Banana Slugs, while U-C Irvine calls its mascot the Anteaters.
